In order for Americans to come together and make informed decisions on important social, political and public policy issues, individuals must have the opportunity to candidly express ideas, views and opinions. Through the exchange of ideas in a respectful, open-minded and peaceful manner, individuals can become educated about important topics.
Disrespectful dialogue among individuals engaged in public discussion disrupts, and sometimes completely impedes, effective communication among individuals with differing views. It becomes a distraction and overtakes the intended purpose of the discussion. It also provokes more disrespect.
When respect for others is demonstrated in discussions on social, political and public policy issues, the likelihood of individuals with different viewpoints being able to understand and accept the opinions of others as valid is increased. Although the individuals may not be persuaded to change their opinions, they are more apt to respect the opinions of others. This encourages unity.
